Maxtor drives that experience electronic failure will often be unable to spin, a burning smell and/or smoke may be observed when a drive fails in this manner.  It is also common that a chip on the PCB (printed circuit board) will fail, this chip is normally labelled SMOOTH and the damage will be apparent.
