LaCie have released the LaCinema Rugged Multimedia Hard Disk storage solution designed by Neil Poulton, long time LaCie device designer.

The LaCinema Rugged is a portable media hard drive designed for storage of and playback of digital media on any TV that supports the HDMI interface.

The device includes numerous features normally associated with more expensive media devices such as Windows Media Centre Edition PCs, the Apple TV and others.  Unlike the above mentioned devices the LaCinema is designed to be carried around from place to place. It features a rubber sleeve to provide resistance against shocks and a hardy scratch resistant aluminium body, LaCie also offer internal protection of the internal hard disk with rubber cushions positioned at key points.

Video formats supported by the device include popular formats such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4, with many well known codecs of each of these standards, such as AVI, VOB, XviD and more.  Audio support is included in the form of MP3, WMA, AC3, AAC and Ogg Vorbis.  Many image formats are included but, as no doubt epected, there is no support for TIFF images or RAW so camera enthusiasts should convert their images first.
